MWAMBA CHIKWEMBA BIOGRAPHY
Mwamba Chikwemba is a multidisciplinary Contemporary artist, Zambian and was born in 1992. She holds a diploma in Public Administration from the National Institute of Public Administration; in 2012 she graduated with a certificate in Information Communication Technology. In June 2016, she was selected as an artist of the month by the German Embassy in Lusaka, Zambia. In 2016, she also participated in the women’s workshop Lusaka, and in September 2016 she attended a mural encounter workshop in Tzaneen, South Africa.
Mwamba attended a National women’s workshop and competition in Livingstone by FSD Zambia in 2017 in which she was awarded 2nd prize winner. In July 2018, she was an artist in residency at Great more studios.
In 2019 Mwamba was selected to be one of the few African artists to attend the Sanaa Festival, show cased her works and create a collaborative mural in Southern Australia, Adelaide during the Sanaa festival. In June 2019 she was awarded in Entertainments and Arts by PUSH WOMEN WARDS. In 2020, November Mwamba participated in the Cynthia Zukas young artist Award and was awarded 1st prize making her the first winner of the Cynthia Zukas award.
Mwamba was awarded a grant by the international summer academy of fine arts to attend the course Beyond Layers: Relief Printing and Pronto Plate Lithography at the 2023 Summer Academy, Austria, Salzbug lectured by Delita Martin.
Her artistic practice is a thought-provoking exploration of the cultural and spiritual significance of headwraps in Zambia, delving into the complexities of identity, culture, and societal expectations. Through her work, she offers nuanced perspectives on the roles and experiences of young women in Zambian society. Currently, her body of work is deeply personal, reflecting on her journey as a mother – from pregnancy to childbirth and navigating the responsibilities that come with it, all while grappling with the absence of her own mother.
As an active member of the Zambia National Visual Arts Council, she has showcased her talents locally and internationally.
